God or Nothing II - Kardinaal Sarah

Aan de hand van uitspraken bespreek ik het boek God or Nothing.

1. 

Het eerste hoofdstuk, over de jeugd van kardinaal Sarah, leest makkelijk weg. Hij krijgt een gedegen opleiding, eerst in Afrika op het seminarie, later in Frankrijk en Rome.

In hoofdstuk 3 worden de pausen Pius XII tot en met Franciscus, die hij heeft meegemaakt, besproken. Hier wordt het lastiger lezen maar het is zeker interessant.

Vanaf hoofdstuk 4 heb ik mijn post-it briefjes nodig. Hier enkele citaten:

Contrary to what we may think, the greatest difficulty of men is not in believing what the Church teaches at the moral level; the most difficult thing for the postmodern world is to believe in God and in his only Son. (blz. 108)

Het is dus niet het moeilijkst om te geloven wat de kerk leert op moreen niveau. Het moeilijkst is te geloven in God en zijn eniggeboren Zoon.

But the interior life is without a doubt the light and the salt of priestly life. It is not a question of neglecting the intellectual preparation of seminarians. Nevertheless, this aspect must not be the sole concern. (blz 114)

Zonder innerlijk geloofsleven komt ook de seminarist er niet. Het is het licht en zout van het priesterlijk leven. Het is geen kwestie van het negeren van de intellectuele voorbereiding, maar dat laatste moet niet het enige aspect zijn waar aandacht aan besteed wordt.

I think that men, like trees, need roots that can be nourished by the best soil, which is quite simply the heritage and milennial tradition of Christianity. The variety of opinions in a society that is flooded with news ought not to make us forget the centuries-old tradition of the Church. The best way to understand and transmit it is the interior life in God. (blz. 115)

Mensen hebben, net als bomen, wortels nodig. Het innerlijk leven doet voor de mens wat de boom met zijn wortels doet: uit goede aarde voeding halen.

Benedictus XVI legt verband tussen liefde en geloof in al het missionaire werk, tussen confessio (beoefenen van geloof) en caritas.

The confessio involves our being, our heart, our lips and our intellect. But the confessio is not something purely abstract and intellectual. 

[Thus] we must be penetrated by the 'confessio', which has to 'personare'; the melody of God must [set the tone for] our being in its entirety. (blz 146, citaat van Benedictus XVI)

Hoofdstuk 6 behandelt vraagstukken uit, wat ze noemen, de postmoderne wereld.

The Christian message is revolutionary: all men are brothers and have one and the same Father. We are all equal in dignity, for we are all created in the image of God. (180)

Dit is op zich al revolutionair. Het gaat over vrijheid:

Man has the right to express himself according to his conscience without being obliged to undergo external pressures. (blz. 184)

Kardinaal Sarah bepleit dat de mens vrije wil heeft, maar alleen echt gelukkig kan worden door het goede te kiezen en zich te schikken onder de vaderlijke God.

Diep wordt ingegaan over de relatie geloof - rede.

Baptized persons have the duty to believe not only with their heart but also with their intellect. (blz. 185)

Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth. (blz. 186)
